India punishes captain for losing series before World Cup

India is set to host the forthcoming 10th edition of the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to commence on February 7, provided all goes according to plan. Prior to this event, the Indian team, under the leadership of Shubman Gill, has faced significant backlash following their defeat in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, losing 2-1 on home soil.

Captain Shubman Gill is facing repercussions for his lackluster performance, particularly due to the unprecedented loss against New Zealand at home. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has mandated that both Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja participate in domestic cricket.

According to the cricket-focused Indian website Cricbuzz, unless there is a last-minute change in decision, Gill and Jadeja are expected to compete in the Ranji Trophy. The match between Saurashtra and Punjab is set to begin on January 22, meaning Gill and Jadeja will be pitted against one another.

This season, Gill has not participated in any Ranji matches, with his last appearance in domestic red-ball cricket being against Karnataka in the previous season. Conversely, Jadeja has only played one match for Saurashtra this season. Both players are currently excluded from the national team, with Jadeja having retired from T20 internationals. Gill is also absent from the T20I series against New Zealand and the upcoming T20 World Cup, thus providing them the chance to play in the remaining two matches of the Ranji Trophy group stage.

Since assuming the captaincy, Gill has struggled with injuries, having sustained two significant injuries that have impacted his performance. Questions regarding his captaincy abilities have also arisen. Meanwhile, Jadeja has managed to score only 43 runs across three matches against New Zealand and has not claimed a single wicket.

Looking ahead, the ODI World Cup is scheduled for next year, and India aims to adequately prepare the team in advance. Rohit Sharma performed well in the previous two series, despite not scoring against New Zealand. Virat Kohli has emerged as India's top batsman in the series against both South Africa and New Zealand.
