Bangladesh to play directly in 2028 T20 World Cup, says ICC

The ICC has excluded Bangladesh from the 2026 T20 World Cup in India due to security reasons. However, the world cricket governing body today confirmed that Bangladesh will play directly in the 2028 T20 World Cup even if it is not in the current tournament.

Australia and New Zealand will jointly host the 11th edition of the T20 World Cup after two years. 20 teams will also participate in that tournament.

Australia and New Zealand have automatically secured a place by virtue of being the hosts. The ICC today announced the names of 10 more teams along with them. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, England, West Indies and South Africa, which have made it to the Super Eight stage of this year's T20 World Cup, are on the list.

And Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland have been given a chance based on their rankings.

Among the teams that failed to make it to the Super Eight of the current T20 World Cup or were not the hosts, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland are at the top of the rankings. The Liton Das-led team is currently ranked 9th in the ICC T20 rankings.
The remaining eight places in the 20-team tournament will be determined through a qualifier. One team from the Americas, two from the European, two from the African and three from the Asia-Pacific regions will qualify for the main stage.
