Defeat to South Africa, India must beat West Indies in the last match

83 for 7—Any team could have collapsed in this situation. But West Indies fought back with the determination of Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd. But in the end, everything was in vain. South Africa has reached the semi-finals very close with an easy win with a great performance with the bat.

West Indies lost 7 wickets for 83 runs in 10.2 overs of the innings. From there, the Holder-Shepherd pair came to life in the match. Their 87-run partnership from 57 balls included 11 sixes. Holder scored 49, and Shepherd remained unbeaten on 52 runs. In the end, the Caribbeans collected 176/8 in 20 overs.

This pair also set some important records. After losing 7 wickets before 100 runs, this is the second highest team total in T20s. Romario Shepherd also made a rare fifty at number 9.

176 seemed like a score to fight for. But South African openers Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram made the match one-sided from the start.

They scored 69 runs in 6 overs of the power play. When de Kock was dismissed on the last ball of the eighth over, the score was 95. If he had scored just one more run, it would have been the highest score by a South African opening pair in a T20 World Cup.

De Kock scored 47 runs. Then Ryan Rickleton joined Markram. Their 82-run partnership off 49 balls put South Africa in complete control of the match.

Markram took the team to victory with an unbeaten 82 runs. South Africa won by 9 wickets, losing just 1 wicket in 16.1 overs. Markram was named Man of the Match.

Roston Chase (1/46) was the only success for the West Indies. However, it was very small in the face of the aggressive batting of the Proteas.

With this win, South Africa is almost certain of a semi-final. A win against Zimbabwe in the next match will complete the formalities. On the other hand, West Indies now have a tough equation. They have to win against India in the last match—otherwise they are certain of an exit.

Brief scores

West Indies: 176/8 in 20 overs (Shepherd 52*, Holder 49; Ngidi 3/30)

South Africa: 177/1 in 16.1 overs (Markram 82*, de Kock 47)

Result: South Africa won by 9 wickets

Man of the Match: Aiden Markram
