Zimbabwe cricket team stranded in India due to war
The Zimbabwe cricket team is stuck in India. Sikandar Raja's team played their last match in the ongoing T20 World Cup in Delhi on Sunday (March 1). They were then supposed to leave for the country. However, due to the suspension of air traffic across much of West Asia, including the Middle East, the Zimbabwean cricketers are not returning home right now.
Cricket-based website ESPN Cricinfo reported that the Zimbabwe cricket team will remain in India for an indefinite period until the situation improves or alternative arrangements are made.
Iran is firing missiles at US military bases in various countries in the Middle East in retaliation for the joint attacks by Israel and the United States. This has closed the airspace. Zimbabwe is the first of the teams to play in the ongoing World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
Cricinfo reported that the team members are expected to return home in stages, with one part scheduled to leave at 4:30 am on Monday and the others later in the day.
The Zimbabwe team's players and coaching staff were booked on an Emirates flight. This flight was supposed to reach Harare from Delhi via Dubai. Now that the airspace is closed, the concerned parties are considering other airlines and routes. However, the Zimbabwe team will stay in the hotel in Delhi until March 4.
When asked whether he had a clear idea about the Zimbabwe team's travel plans after the match against South Africa on Sunday (March 1), coach Justin Simmons said, "No, I haven't heard anything like that. There wasn't anything when the game started. After that, I was focused on the game and didn't hear anything else."
